HARMONY

When a picture has colours that are adjacent on the colour wheel, or when it has close values and similarities in line, scale and shapes, it will feel harmonious and be comfortable and pleasing to look at. To enliven a harmonious painting, a subtle variation of these close elements can be employed such as a slightly brighter colour or some heavier lines, or a strange, perhaps wobbly horizon line.

CONTRAST

Opposites can be very dynamic. They can create excitement, tension and surprise, and the resulting work will be lively and edgy. Especially with colour, opposites push and pull at the picture surface. You can use the complementary pairs to do this. We often see these contrasts in nature, man-made articles and advertising because they are eye-catching. Other contrasts include large and small, bright and dull, curved and straight.
